In case you didn't know, the Paramount Network had created a tv show reboot of the cult classic film Heathers. However, the show has recently been cancelled, before it even aired. The advertisements for this reboot were met with a lot of backlash on social media for several different reasons.
One of the main issues was the terrible depiction of LGBT children. In the Paramount Network reboot, the Heathers have been replaced with a group of popular LGBT teens at their school. More representation in mainstream media is good but we want good representation. The LGBT characters in this tv show are depicted as vile and menacing, even going as far as to joke about and fake suicides. And on another note, the basic premise of Heathers is a couple seeks revenge against them by killing them. Is the representation of LGBT people that we want entail vile descriptions and murder? No
The other main reason, and the reason it was ultimately cancelled, was its sensitive subject matter. With the increasing amount of school shootings that are occurring in our country, the initial release date of the tv show kept getting pushed back until it was eventually just cancelled once the social media backlash got to be too much. This goes to show that social media is gaining a lot of influence in today's society.
